Overcoming the Fear of Therapy

About 10 years ago one of my male patients, after about 5 months in therapy, came into session and said, “You know I didn’t really want to get into therapy at first, it was just too scary.” He went on to say, “But what I think is happening is that now I am more thinkful.”

When I encouraged him to say more, he reported that, now before he does anything, “I think more before I make a decision or decide what I’m going to do.” With a little more probing, he said, “I feel good about that.”

After being a therapist for nearly 30 years, I still find it fascinating and wonderful to watch as my patients discover themselves on a deeper level.

If you have been putting off getting help because you fear the therapy process, let me assure you that it is no more scary than having an honest conversation with someone you trust. Please don’t put it off any longer – call me at 512-878-3452 to make an appointment.
